Artificial Intelligence, business perspective and ethical implications

The history of Artificial intelligence began in antiquity, with myths and stories of artificial being endowed with intelligence or consciousness. Perhaps IBM is the early bird in AI who started working by assembling the bits and pieces and later they gave it a name IBM Watson. From 2011 onwards, several other organization got highly ambitious and thought of taking “moon shorts” with Artificial Intelligence. Few sponsored game show, where the AI system started challenging human with difficult and oddly worded questions, people began to believe that AI could act as a catalyst in achieving the organizational mission and empower society.

Almost in every industry, AI is buzzing word and has become a part of mainstream conversations. The business of all shapes and sizes are considering Artificial Intelligence to solve the business problem to make a significant impact. In early days, only the large companies could afford to invest in AI, but now even a startup has to build a use case and prototype to showcase their AI capabilities. We consider this a major changes in industrial outlook from technological advancement. Even the hardware and resources available are improving and getting cheaper.

Cognitive Strategy And Ai In Large Enterprise

Artificial Intelligence is flourishing in the business world, but most of the companies are not yet getting any strategic value from their investment means it is moreover a Research & Development project for them. However, their initiatives are well defined and targeted. If you go by statistics, very few companies are achieving the full potential of AI and rest are struggling to build even a reasonable business proposition in terms of a product prototype. Industries like Healthcare, Automotive, Financial Services and Education have a lot to gain from AI implementation. Few companies are even exploring the possibilities of removing cancer with AI. The autonomous cars are burgeoning and Venture Capitalist are betting on Automotive industry like never before. Companies are competing with each other to gain momentum and this competition has forced even the large players to take a cognitive approach.

Nescode AI

What would you do with a machine that could see, perceive images and determine what they are? And how would you redesign a business model if you had a machine that could converse via speech or text with a human being? What if an algorithm and machine could find unexpected patterns in any dataset? Yes, these are some of the states of AI implementation in enterprise and one can recognize in term advancement in Google mail, Cortana, Alexa, Siri etc. And these advancements are possible only on the basis of monetising the real value of data by modelling. Business needs to tap into real-time data to extract the insights and make predictive analytics/suggestion. Consistency is one of the key factors when it comes to success whether it is personal or business affair. By implementing the AI, an organization can achieve the consistency and deliver the consistent experience whether it’s a retail, healthcare, education, logistics or manufacturing sector.

New Job And Skill In A World Of Smart Machine

The workplace dynamics is changing like never before in 4th industrial revolution and the credit should go to advancement in technology by automation aided by Artificial Intelligence. When it comes to Job, in the market most of the job predictions after AI implementation focused on negativity whereas AI implementation will improve the quality of life significantly like earlier. Ten years before there were many skills that had been considered valuable are considered obsolete today. And you never know today’s skill may be obsolete tomorrow. When millions of jobs are going to be automated, those people who work on that can be taught about better skills to live a decent life. Take an example of a computer, two decades ago similar havoc was there about computer but statistics show that computer has created millions of job and improved the lifestyle of people by syncing information and connecting people.

Smart Machine

The economy is becoming permeated with disruptive technologies which are transforming how people live and are creating demand for a new skill that very few people had just a few years ago. Smart machines are going to create millions of new job, therefore, it is important for the education sector to play a pivotal role by equipping children with the skill that will help them thrive in the 21st century. It’s time for us to analyse how and why machines are being invented and how it is going to simplify the life of mankind. Take a simple example of ATM Machine, people find ATM machine, payment bank enabled smartphones; almost in every corner and hand. For a time being, imagine a life without ATM and smartphones? Technologies are always going to be a companion for people if it's been used for well being.

Organizational, Social, And Ethical Implications Of AI

It is widely agreed that there is a profound implication for organizations and societies from Artificial Intelligence. No need to scare of AI growth and implementation. From the ancient times, right from the invention of fire, knife to Atom bomb, there is always two side of implementation and uses. It depends upon how you are using the technology rather than invention. Even if you use a knife in an evil way, it is going to harm the person therefore focus should be more on invention and implementation for the society at large. We do agree that there will be various social and ethical issues that will come to the fore as AI become more intelligent and more widely adopted but the solution is the right design and implementation model of AI. Need to bring together researchers and practitioners from various disciplines to detect and solve issues related to ethical design in AI in the very early stage.

There is an organization backed by the world’s top education institute, their goal is to discover and intact the path to safe Artificial Intelligence. They do fundamental and long term research toward the creation of safe AI platform. We have started our own initiatives to study and formulate best practice on AI technology under Nescode AI. More than human, probably there is no potential threat to society from any technological inventions made. Most of the companies and developers would probably prefer not to develop a system that could hurt someone. A recent example are of Google, where hundreds of engineers denied to work for US Govt. project on AI. Nevertheless, this can potentially be difficult to predict.

Conclusion

Technology may be viewed and felt like a wave hitting us whether we want it or not. Irrespective of whether we are willing to align ourselves with transition or not, there will be a significant impact. At the same time, we have limited control over unintentional changes to our behaviour by the way we adopt and use technology. Leading companies and educational institute in the technology sector have proved that Artificial intelligence implementation in business space will minimise the human error and improve productivity. Advance algorithm and AI are improving spell-checkers, voice recognition system, ad targeting,  fraud detection, healthcare, criminal justice, education and many more.

From the ethical and design perspective, the economic and human cost is because the automated decision systems were programmed separately. This shows that it is especially important for control mechanism between decision systems to interact. Such a system should have a mechanism that automatically limit behaviour, and also informs the program manager about the conditions deemed to require human review to eliminate the danger.
